Artists are reentering the Brisbane portrait prize following a two year boycott. This absence stemmed from previous concerns regarding entries created with artificial intelligence software. Now, several artists are participating once more, signaling a new phase for the long standing competition.
Among the returning participants, some First Nations painters plan to leverage "ancestral integrity," referring to it as another form of AI, in their pursuit of victory. The prize has previously featured works like one depicting Australian comedian Alice Fraser, photographed on stage, with generic superheroes and 1950s housewives created by generative AI software Krea. A metallic claw was shown grasping to pick a prize from these AI generated women.
