The board strongly criticized the company, stating Facebook was wrong to have left up this content. It also highlighted "inadequate safeguards" regarding such material and called for Meta to do more to tackle AI generated fake imagery across its services. This decision aligns with growing demands to curb the spread of artificial intelligence generated fakes.
The ruling specifically concerned two videos. One falsely showed a Labour party councillor in Scotland making inflammatory comments about refugees. The other AI generated video depicted a young Muslim campaign volunteer offering health advice while performing absurd exercises or eating junk food. The oversight board deemed both videos should have been taken down, emphasizing the need for stricter content moderation.
