Two men, an Egyptian and an Eritrean previously expelled from the United States by the Trump administration to Equatorial Guinea, reportedly endured severe abuse. According to witnesses and human rights lawyers, these individuals were bound, fitted with bags over their heads, beaten, and forcibly pushed down stairs. This violence unfolded in plain sight of other US deportees before the two men were moved to a prison.
Around 30 individuals deported from the US remain confined at a hotel located on the outskirts of Malabo. Detainees suspect the assault on the two men was a direct reprisal for revealing the hotel's poor conditions and violence to the press and human rights advocates. The remaining deportees are now grappling with flashbacks and live in terror of potential future retaliation, as human rights groups express serious concern.
