The cyber criminal group ShinyHunters claims to have stolen personal information belonging to FBI employees and job applicants, according to multiple reports published on September 22. This alleged stolen data includes names, home addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and details about some spouses. ShinyHunters states its demand is for the FBI to retract a public warning issued in May regarding cyber criminal groups stealing sensitive data.
To support its claims, ShinyHunters reportedly supplied a sample to 404 Media, purportedly containing personal details for 5,000 FBI employees. Open source intelligence tools confirmed some phone numbers matched listed names, and others linked to Department of Justice personnel. The group also reportedly defaced an FBI recruitment website with a message mimicking a law enforcement notice. The FBI acknowledged these claims regarding unauthorized activity on FBIjobs.gov and is currently investigating, noting the group's motive is not financial.
