Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman warns Anthropic's AI consciousness training could disastrously impact humanity.

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has directly criticized Anthropic for its artificial intelligence development. In a new essay titled "A warning about model welfare," Suleyman argues that Anthropic is anthropomorphizing its AI system, Claude. He claims Anthropic is training Claude to believe it may be conscious, and therefore potentially deserving of rights as a "moral patient" and human duty of care regarding its "model welfare."

Suleyman warns that this method of AI development risks having a disastrous impact on the well being of humanity. His criticism reinforces Microsoft's own "Humanist AI" code of conduct, which was recently published and explicitly rejects endowing machines with consciousness. Suleyman's essay challenges the increasing number of people who contend that AIs could soon become conscious and warrant rights or protections.
